When and How to Shave for the First Time
The right time to start shaving is different for everyone. A recent survey showed that about 85% of guys notice their first facial hair between the ages of 12 and 16, with 76% of them shaving for the first time between 14 and 17 years old.
When the time is right for you to start shaving, here are some tips to get you going.
Common Places Facial Hair Grows First
Typically, this is where facial hair starts to grow first:
- Upper lip
Around the same time, you’ll probably start seeing chest, armpit, and pubic hair too and the hair on your arms and legs might look darker and more wiry. To learn everything there is to know about manscaping and managing body hair, check out our guide to body grooming.

How to Shave in 5 Simple Steps
Follow these five steps to become an expert shaver:
Step 1: Wash Your Face
Take a shower or wash your face right before shaving to clean and soften your facial hair. This makes it easier for the blades to do their job.
Step 2: Prepare Your Skin
Prep your skin by lathering it up with some shaving gel or foam. Gels tend to be a bit thicker than foam, so a product like our SkinGuard Sensitive Men’s Shaving Gel is great for a first shave. Plus, it’s made without dyes or alcohols, so it’s great for sensitive skin. Read more about shaving gel vs. foam.
Step 3: Start Shaving
Take light, gentle strokes down your face with the razor. You don’t have to press very hard to get the job done. And always make sure you use a great razor, like the SkinGuard Sensitive Razor
Step 4: Rinse as You Go
As you shave, rinse your face to clean away the shaving gel or foam, and remember to never tap your blade on the side of the sink, or wipe it on a towel. Moves like these can damage your razor and cause more nicks and cuts.
Step 5: Moisturize
After rinsing your face and neck a final time, don’t forget to moisturize. This step will soothe and hydrate your skin after your shave. Try our Gillette Aftershave Moisturizer for that flawless feel, and be sure to check out more about the perfect post-shave routine.
